Short description
Acupuncture is based on the principle that our health is dependent on the energy inside the body. This energy is known as Qi. The energy moves through the body using series of channels. Acupuncture points are known entrances to these channels. By inserting fine needles in the right points the acupuncturist stimulates the body’s own healing response to a particular illness and helps to restore natural balance. Acupuncture needles are very fine and are solid (not hollow). When a needle is inserted in the body the sensation is a small tingling or dull ache. Sometimes they are inserted for a short time, sometimes for longer. A pleasant feeling of relaxation may occur but a heaviness in the limbs can arise just as well. The acupuncturist may supplement the needle treatment with moxa, a smouldering herb which is used to warm acupuncture points to encourage the body’s energy to flow smoothly. Massage or tapping may also be used additionally.

Options
Toyohari style acupuncture is available. Toyohari style means needles are not inserted and this makes it extremely gentle and suitable for babies, children and those unsure about needles. For more information on this acupuncture style see www.toyohari.org.uk.
